The Handmaid’s Tale returned this week for its fifth season, which already has audiences wondering if the series will be reaching its ultimate conclusion when this season ends on Hulu. June has had quite the journey so far, serving as a handmaid, before joining a rebellion and fleeing to Canada. Will this be where her journey ends? Here is the answer…
Is this the last season of The Handmaid’s Tale?
Hulu has announced that The Handmaid’s Tale will end with season 6. That means fans have got both this new season, which started on September 15, 2022, to enjoy, before looking forward to one final outing that will wrap everything up. After the murder of Commander Waterford, June’s next step isn’t as clear as she would perhaps like, so it’s a blessing that showrunners and creator Bruce Miller will have this season to lay the foundations for one last hoorah in season 6.
With season 5 having just started, no official date has yet been given for season 6. Following the timeline for past seasons, it’s likely that it will land in late 2023, or early 2024. With June and Serena likely to be the central focus point of season 5, exactly what the final season will be about isn’t immediately clear.
As for the cast? Nobody could make a guess without risks. There’s always the opportunity for shocking deaths when it comes to The Handmaid’s Tale. The only person who will absolutely make a return, is Elisabeth Moss as June.
While we also expect Gilead to be completely destroyed by the time The Handmaid’s Tale ends, we will likely see it return when Miller finishes developing a follow-up series based on original author Margaret Atwood’s sequel, The Testaments. The story there follows the villainous Aunt Lydia, as well as a young woman living in Gilead called Agnes, and a young woman living in Canada called Daisy. Miller’s spin-off hasn’t yet been ordered to series, but it would be more surprising to see Hulu pass on giving it a home, than it would be to see it picked up.
