Thunderful has announced its next SteamWorld game and it’s a city builder.

Revealed yesterday during a Thunderful stream, SteamWorld Build is a new city-builder set in the SteamWorld universe, due for release on consoles and PC sometime this year. In it, your goal is to escape a dying planet, and the only way to do that is to build a mining town to dig up “vital, long-lost technology.” You must manage your city as needs and the citizens living there grow, and you must defend your creation from the deadly creatures that lurk below.

Check out the SteamWorld build announcement trailer below:

“There’s an abandoned mine beneath your town, and it’s rumored to be filled with ancient technology that holds the key to escaping impending doom,” reads the game’s Steam page. “Use the natural resources above ground and the abundant ores buried in the mine to expand your city. Stimulate new levels of habitation to join the quest to dig deeper, unearth untold riches and ultimately help them find them off the planet.”

Thunderful says as your town grows, new steamfolk will find their way to the settlement hoping to call it home. And to keep them all happy, your city needs to be firing on all cylinders. If you start digging and mining the soil underneath, eventually “something will start chasing you back”. You must defend your workers from creepy creatures and prevent the walls on your Steamfolk from collapsing as you advance deeper and deeper into the mines.

Here are some additional SteamWorld build features:

  • Set in the multi-award winning SteamWorld universe
  • Build your own unique SteamWorld mining town
  • Explore and develop an abandoned mine
  • Manage and optimize increasingly complex resource chains
  • Cope with the dangers you will encounter
  • Experience five distinctive SteamWorld-inspired maps filled with mystery
  • Easy to learn and play with keyboard and mouse or with a controller
  • Three balanced levels of difficulty offer a challenge for players of all skill levels

If you like that, you’re in luck because Thunderful already has a Steam demo for you to try. Thunderful says the demo doesn’t include controller support yet, but the full game will. The demo will be updated at a later date to include controller support.

SteamWorld Build is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC sometime this year.
