A migrant claims to have been paid $200 in cash by a mystery woman named “Perla” to recruit people from a migrant resource center in Texas to board a plane to Martha’s Vineyard on Wednesday.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis claimed responsibility for two flights that transported about 50 undocumented migrants to the upscale island of Massachusetts as part of what the Republican official called “a resettlement program to transport illegal immigrants to places of refuge.” It follows similar plans created by conservative governors in Texas and Arizona to move migrants into Democratic-controlled areas in the North in protest at the Biden administration’s border policies.
Apparently, local authorities in Martha’s Vineyard were not notified in advance of the migrants’ arrival. On Thursday, the Dukes County Emergency Management Association tweeted that the “unexpected urgent humanitarian situation” has necessitated the opening of shelters on Martha’s Vineyard.
And strange details are emerging about how the migrants got on the planes in the first place, with several outlets reporting that people on the planes were misled about their prospects upon arrival.
A 27-year-old Venezuelan migrant even claims to have received money from a mysterious person for finding people outside the San Antonio migrant assistance center to board one of the flights.
The man, who calls himself simply Emmanuel, told the San Antonio Report that a woman he only knew as “Perla” said she wanted to take migrants to “sanctuary states” where more government support was available to them.
“Perla informed me that in these states of refuge, the state has the advantage of helping migrants,” Emmanuel told the outlet, explaining that he gave Perla the contact information of about 10 other migrants. “I was just the facilitator because I like helping people.”
He added that Perla – who told him she was not involved in organizing the flights and simply wanted to help people – said the money she offered to pay Emmanuel to find others came from an “anonymous benefactor”, who also financed the flights.
A separate report in the Vineyard Leaf contained a reference to an unnamed migrant who said he was recruited by a person named Perla to go to Massachusetts, despite having an immigration court appearance in Los Angeles next week. “I think it’s all a ploy to trick us into missing our court dates so we can get in trouble with the law and they can deport us,” the unnamed migrant said.
Another person who has relocated to Martha’s Vineyard and calls himself Luis, told Reuters that someone named Perla approached her and her family outside of the San Antonio immigration center. Luis said Perla put them in a hotel but didn’t tell them their last name or any affiliations and asked them to sign a liability waiver.
Separately, on Thursday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott dispatched two busloads of migrants to be dropped off near Vice President Kamala Harris’ official residence in Washington, DC
“Republicans play politics with people and use them as props,” President Biden said Thursday night at the gala of the congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. “What they are doing is just wrong.”
