Kelowna Motionball Marathon of Sport Has Record Attendance – Okanagan

Throughout its 10-year history, the Motionball Marathon of Sport has been about having fun and bringing people together.

This year, 36 teams of Special Olympians will come together for a day to raise funds for the Special Olympics Canada Foundation, participating in everything from ultimate frisbee to kickball to street hockey and more.

“It’s basically just a day of fun that we’ve called the Marathon of Sport,” said Derek Fuhr, Motionball Kelowna volunteer events director. Every 20 minutes you switch off and do a different sport. It’s a very non-competitive event that’s more about getting out and having fun and getting to know the athletes.”

Kelowna Special Olympian remains physically and mentally fit despite the COVID-19 pandemic

Patrick Ray has been putting together a team for four years now, which has become a tradition for him and his team.

“Since our first participation in the event, we have been very committed to supporting the athletes of Special Olympics,” said Ray.

His team’s Special Olympian, Kalen Von Unruh, says he had a great time playing street hockey with his team.

“I’m having fun playing motionball today.”

Courtney Fedevich played on the Wilson M Beck Insurance Services Inc. motionball team.

“Motionball is a big part of our community and it’s really important that we have a good participation for the Special Olympians and the athletes today,” Fedevich said.

Kelowna Motionball Marathon of Sport raises $60,000 for Special Olympics

Special Olympian Joanna Morris was cheered on by her team after completing the obstacle course.

“It feels like team spirit,” Morris said.

“We have a lot of courage for each other and these people that I work with are amazing and they’re athletic and I’m so happy to be part of this team with a lot of strength and courage and hard work.”
