Former President Donald Trump and his MAGA movement’s unwavering support of violent extremism and hateful conspiracy theories have given President Joe Biden and the Democrats a perfect opportunity to officially declare MAGA and his allies an active terrorist threat.
Ideally, President Biden would have made this announcement at the United We Stand White House Summit, which was attended by diverse community leaders from across the country to discuss best policies and practices to combat hateful violence that is affecting our democracy and public safety. But the chance remains.
If we are to be frank and honest, this “hate-fueled violence” that threatens all of our communities primarily comes from a single source: an incestuous network of MAGA actors, sponsored by the GOP and right-wing media, who have increasingly done so threatened law enforcement, Democrats, educators, poll watchers, doctors, non-Trump Republicans, and any and every institution standing in the way of their white, Christian nationalist utopia.
Earlier this week, Igor Lanis, a 53-year-old Trump fanatic in Michigan, murdered his wife and seriously injured one of his children. He, in turn, was killed after firing his shotgun at the police. His daughter, Rebecca Lanis, told The Daily Beast that her father’s acceptance of the QAnon conspiracy theory “contributed very greatly to what happened.” She said he was once an “extremely loving” father with no history of violence, but that all changed after Trump’s loss in 2020. According to Lanis, her father got used to the big lie and started walking down “crazy rabbit holes,” which eventually radicalized him and culminated in bloodshed.
It is worth remembering that Ashli Babbitt, who was shot dead by Capitol police on January 6 after attempting to illegally enter the Capitol, was also partially radicalized by QAnon conspiracies. She is now praised by Rep. Paul Gosar, a white nationalist ally, and seen as a martyr in some right-wing circles.
In 2019, the FBI declared QAnon a domestic terror threat in an internal memo. The hateful conspiracy theory believes a deep state of liberals is secretly running an international pedophile sex trafficking ring. The FBI warned that in the run-up to the 2020 election, QAnon has the potential to radicalize individuals or groups.
The year is 2022 and the former president has spent the past few weeks promoting QAnon content on his Truth Social platform since the FBI raided his Mar-a-Lago residence and found hundreds of top-secret, top-secret documents Has. Media Matters senior researcher Alex Kaplan reports that Trump has increased at least 50 QAnon-supporting accounts to his 4 million followers. Since the summer, more than a dozen Republican candidates supporting QAnon have won their primary. It is highly likely that some of these potential terror threats will be roaming the halls of Congress in 2023.
Influential right-wing peddlers of hate – like the woman behind the Libs of TikTok account and The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh – have seized on the “groomer” panic and used it to attack medics and hospitals.
On August 11, Libs of TikTok falsely claimed that Boston Children’s Hospital performed hysterectomies on children. On August 15, Matt Walsh incorrectly said the hospital would sit “Every toddler… on the way to being sterilized and slaughtered before they can even speak.“Not surprisingly, the hospital has since faced a barrage of threats, hate mail and harassment. (This Thursday, the FBI announced the arrest of a Massachusetts woman in one of the bomb threats.)
A brief synopsis: A domestic terror threat is compounded by the former President of the United States being the figurehead of the GOP — a party that currently supports and represents extremist candidates and works with experts who promote hateful conspiracies that have radicalized individuals to harass, intimidate and threaten violence.
One would think that these revelations would top the news cycle given the recent violence. However, since Trump is a white man and the criminal suspects are not Muslims, there is no war on terror. Instead, some media outlets are bending over backwards to court Republican viewers and criticizing President Biden for speaking before US Marines, as Republican and Democratic presidents have done many times before him.
The lesson is that being a white MAGA extremist is good. Just look at Arizona State Rep. Mark Finchem.
If you’re MAGA, you can hold office, be an active member of a far-right hate group that participated in the January 6 coup attempt, and move closer to your goal of becoming Secretary of State for Arizona. Finchem, who actively promotes the Big Lie, recently accused former Vice President Mike Pence of orchestrating a coup against Trump. He is also a proud member of the Oath Keepers, whose leaders will be tried this month on seditious conspiracy charges for allegedly helping Trump in his failed coup d’état.
“The year is 2022 and the former president has spent the past few weeks promoting QAnon content on his Truth Social platform since the FBI raided his Mar-a-Lago residence and found hundreds of top-secret, top-secret documents Has. ”
Last week, the Anti-Defamation League Center on Extremism identified more than 370 Oath Keeper members they believe are currently serving in law enforcement agencies. Last year, BuzzFeed News reported that 28 elected officials have been linked to the violent anti-government group, which believes the “deep state” has taken over the federal government and plans to enslave it.
In August, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security released a joint intelligence bulletin warning of an increase in threats and attacks on law enforcement following the lawful seizure of top-secret and sensitive documents found at Mar-a-Lago. Fox News and right-wing media jumped on the story, promoting “deep state” conspiracy theories that inevitably inspired a Darwin Prize winner to launch a deadly attack on the FBI’s Ohio office.
This message is already in the trash can. Luckily I keep receipts.
According to the FBI, domestic terrorism is defined as “violent, criminal acts committed by individuals and/or groups to further ideological ends derived from domestic influences, such as B. those of a political, religious, social, racial or ecological nature”. In case you forgot, thousands of Trump supporters were instigated in part by him to attack the nation’s Capitol on January 6 as part of his failed coup attempt to overthrow our democracy. They were armed with guns, baseball bats, stun guns, flagpoles used as clubs, pepper spray, rope and a suspect alleged to have planted bombs. Your actions fit the FBI’s definition perfectly.
We cannot dismiss them as outliers. You are not the exception. They are the basis of the GOP.
More than half of Republican Senate candidates have “rejected, challenged, or attempted to overturn the 2020 election results.” These include retired US Army Brig. Gen Don Bolduc, who just won the GOP primaries for the New Hampshire Senate seat — despite a super PAC aligned with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and spending $4 million to support Bolduc’s less-crazy GOP Support main opponent Chuck Morse. For his part, Buldoc channeled Leonidas and celebrated his win with cosplay – appearing with a small shield of arrows to symbolize his triumphant victory over the GOP establishment. (Bizarrely, two days after winning his primary, Buldoc freaked outwho admits that Biden is the “legitimate” president.)
The sad reality is that Bolduc, Finchem, Gosar — along with Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebart, Matt Gaetz, and Pennsylvania GOP nominee Doug Mastriano — are the present and future of the Republican Party.
When we don’t speak up, we become complicit in the normalization of their anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, hate, threats, and “wanton” recklessness just because they’re conservative, white, and Republican. If MAGA’s radicalized violence is not terrorism, then the word should be done away with, or we should finally admit that we only use it when the suspects are black and brown.
Nonetheless, President Biden, elected officials, law enforcement, and leaders of various institutions now have an opportunity to build on Biden’s bold statements and go one step further to save our fledgling democracy: Declare MAGA and finally address MAGA as an active terror threat to our nation as such — rather than coddling them under the pretense of politeness, the delusion of impartiality, and the hope of good TV ratings.
