The traumatic death of Hodor was one of the saddest scenes from Game of thrones which made fans burst into tears. The fans never anticipated this charming, gentle and naïve character of Game of Thrones to die. However, it was written in his fate, he was supposed to die, and even fans were supposed to endure this huge loss.

Derived from the phrase “Hold the Door,” Hodor’s name has certainly emerged from the mental disability that he suffered at a very young age because of Bran Stark’s Warging powers. Poor Hodor could only remember the phrase “Hold the Door” and could speak only one word, “Hodor,” for the rest of his life. Soon everyone started calling this clement boy with the name Hodor, which he admired a lot. 

Even though throughout the series, Hodor was depicted as a mentally disabled character who was unwilling to fight; he was strong, keen, and loyal to starks. Even at the time of his death, he showed his utter bravery and died as a hero.

How did Hodor Die?

In season 6, it was revealed why Hodor is Hodor. As Bran Stark and the Three-Eyed Raven go on a little trip in the past at Winterfell, Bran can see younger Hodor, whose name is Wylis. He could see him talking and acting like a normal person.

Amazed by Hodor’s appearance in the past, Bran also tries to call Hodor by his real name, but he never receives a desirable response from him instead of only one word, “Hodor.”

While everyone in the cave, including Leaf, Three-Eyed Raven, Meera, Hodor, and Summer, the Dire wolf, knew that no one could get into the Three-Eyed Raven’s cave, Bran gets into the vision without Three-Eyed Raven, where Night King suddenly appears, touches him and leaves a mark on his hand. The mark enables Night King to have access to the cave, and soon Thee-Eyed Raven lets Bran know that the Night King knows where Bran is.

When Three-Eyed Raven and Bran again get into the past vision together at Winterfell, where they see the young Hodor, Meera discovers that Night King is coming for Bran with his army of the dead. Leaf and Summer the Direwolf try to stop the army, and Night King enters the cave but fails.

Bran, from the past vision at Winterfell, hears Meera from the present screaming and asking him to warg Hodor to use his powers to escape the cave.

Bran gets caught up in the overlapped visions from the past and present, and he can hear the voices from the present while still being in the visions of the past. Soon the White Walker kills Three-Eyed Raven, and Bran witnesses his death in the Past visions at Winterfell.

Hodor, Meera, and Leaf attempt to get Vision-Unconscious Bran out of the cave, and while running towards the door, Leaf goes on a suicide mission to save Bran, Meera, and Hodor.

When the three of them find the exit door of the cave, Hodor, as commanded by Meera, holds the door to stop the army of the dead and the Night King. Meera and Bran successfully escape, while Hodor becomes a victim at the hands of the White Walkers’ army.

However, at the same time, Bran, who hears Meera from the present asking Hodor to hold the door, accidentally wargs Hodor from the present while still in the vision, which makes young Hodor (Wylis) in the past see the visions of his last moments. Traumatized, Wylis loses his sanity and only remembers the phrase “Hold the Door which later makes him monosyllabic.

Hodor was one of the underrated characters from Game of Thrones since the day of his first appearance. However, In season 6 of the show, his life secrets started to reveal. In the episode, which was released on 22nd May 2016, titled “The Door,” Hodor’s past life and the story of his death was portrayed. So, to be more precise, Hodor was killed at the hands of the White Walkers’ army (Wights) in episode 5 of Game of Thrones season 6 while holding the door of the cave and helping Meera and Bran escape from the Night King.
