90-year-old Manitoba artist starting art classes after pandemic hiatus – Winnipeg

For Joyce Anderson, applying paint to canvas is a creative outlet and escape.

It’s something that couldn’t be more true for the 90-year-old acclaimed Manitoba artist after two years of dealing with pandemic lockdowns.

“Painting saved my life,” Anderson told Global News.

“Especially when COVID came out and we were in quarantine, a lot of people didn’t know what to do with themselves, but I did.”

Anderson says focusing on her artwork has helped her weather isolation during the pandemic.

Ken Miller has been taking classes with Anderson for about seven years and says he’s thrilled her art classes are starting up again.

“I was lost without her,” Miller said.

“And it gives direction and inspiration and motivates to paint. And she’s just a godsend when it comes to being a great teacher and a great artist.”
